Broca's Aphasia

Also known as: Nonfluent Aphasia, Expressive Aphasia, Motor Aphasia, Anterior Aphasia

A type of aphasia caused by damage to Broca's area in the left frontal lobe of the brain, typically resulting from stroke. People with Broca's aphasia have difficulty producing speech and writing but generally retain good comprehension of spoken and written language. Their speech is often slow, effortful, and telegraphic—using mainly content words while omitting grammatical words. Despite understanding what they want to say, they struggle to express themselves verbally or in writing. This makes asynchronous written communication tools potentially valuable, as users can take time to compose messages using vocabulary support rather than spontaneous production.
