AAC

Abbreviation for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC encompasses all forms of communication other than oral speech that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas. This includes both unaided systems (such as gestures, sign language, and facial expressions) and aided systems (such as communication boards, speech-generating devices, and communication apps). AAC supports people with various conditions affecting speech production, including cerebral palsy, autism, ALS, aphasia, and developmental disabilities. Modern AAC increasingly incorporates digital technologies with symbol-based interfaces, text-to-speech, and predictive features.
