Swedish Sign Language
Also known as: SSL, Svenskt teckenspråk
The sign language used by the Deaf community in Sweden, recognized as an official minority language since 1981. Like other national sign languages, SSL is a complete natural language with its own grammar distinct from spoken Swedish. It uses manual signs (hand shapes, movements, locations) combined with non-manual features (facial expressions, mouth movements, body posture) to convey meaning. SSL vocabulary is often borrowed for Key Word Signing programs in Sweden to support communication with children who have disabilities.
