Relief Chart
Also known as: 3D Chart, Haptic Chart, Relief Graph
A tactile data visualization that uses height (the third dimension) to encode data values, making charts accessible to people with visual impairments through touch. Unlike flat tactile graphics that use only texture or raised lines, relief charts represent data magnitude through physical elevation—taller elements indicate larger values. This approach leverages the finding that visual and haptic perception share similar cognitive processing pathways. Relief charts can be produced through 3D printing, making them a practical solution for inclusive education where both sighted and blind students can work with the same physical materials.
