Life Story Work

Also known as: Life Story, Biography Work, Digital Biography

A person-centered approach to care that involves gathering and sharing information about an individual's life history, preferences, relationships, and experiences. In dementia care, life story work helps caregivers see the person behind the condition and supports meaningful communication and reminiscence. Life stories may be captured in paper booklets, digital applications, or multimedia formats including photographs, audio recordings, and videos. When implemented well, life story work can improve the quality of care by enabling staff to personalize interactions, reduce distressing behaviors by understanding triggers, and maintain the person's sense of identity as cognitive abilities decline. Digital life story tools offer advantages over paper formats, including easier updating, more engaging multimedia presentation, and better accessibility for staff.
