Disability Simulation
Also known as: Simulation Study, Simulated Disability
A research or awareness technique where non-disabled individuals attempt to experience disability through artificial constraints such as blindfolds, noise-dampening headphones, vision-distorting glasses, or wheelchair use. While sometimes used for preliminary technology evaluations or empathy-building exercises, research has demonstrated that simulation does not accurately replicate the experience, skills, or strategies of people with actual disabilities. Blindfolded sighted users navigate and interact with technology differently than blind users; simulation cannot capture years of adaptation, learned techniques, or the full context of living with a disability. Accessibility research relying solely on simulation studies may produce solutions poorly suited to actual users.
