Dysphagia
Also known as: Swallowing Disorder, Swallowing Difficulty
A swallowing disorder that makes it difficult or impossible to move food or liquid from the mouth to the stomach safely. Dysphagia commonly occurs alongside communication disorders following stroke, traumatic brain injury, or neurological conditions. While not directly a communication impairment, dysphagia often co-occurs with aphasia and dysarthria and is addressed by speech-language pathologists. For digital accessibility, dysphagia is relevant because individuals with this condition may also have related motor or cognitive impairments that affect technology use, and they may benefit from AAC devices or apps that help communicate dietary needs and restrictions to caregivers.
