Haptic Interface

Also known as: Haptic Device, Tactile Interface, Touch Interface

An interface that communicates with users through the sense of touch, using vibrations, forces, or textures to convey information. Haptic interfaces can range from simple vibration motors in mobile devices to sophisticated force-feedback controllers and custom tactile displays. For users who are blind or have low vision, haptic feedback provides an alternative channel for receiving spatial, navigational, or confirmation information that would otherwise require vision. Examples include refreshable braille displays, vibrotactile navigation aids, and full-body interaction devices like floor-based tactile platforms.
