Widgit Symbols

Also known as: Widgit Rebus, Widgit Literacy Symbols

A commercial symbol set used in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and literacy support, developed by Widgit Software in the UK. Widgit Symbols are designed with consistent schematic representations that build on a core vocabulary, making them particularly suitable for supporting emerging literacy because the same symbol components combine systematically across words. Unlike photographic images, Widgit Symbols use stylized drawings that emphasize key semantic features. They are widely used in UK special education settings, communication boards, and accessible documents, and can be integrated into various AAC software applications alongside or as an alternative to Picture Communication Symbols (PCS).
