Micro Assistive Technology
Also known as: Micro-AT, Accessibility Plugins
Small, single-feature assistive technology components that address specific accessibility needs, analogous to browser plugins or app add-ons in mainstream software. Unlike full assistive technology suites, micro-AT focuses on individual enhancements that can be developed by small companies, researchers, or individuals with specialized knowledge of particular disabilities. The concept envisions a common technical core on which diverse micro-AT components could be built, enabling a vibrant ecosystem where accessibility features can be mixed and matched rather than requiring users to purchase comprehensive (and expensive) assistive technology packages. This model has partially emerged through accessibility browser extensions, mobile accessibility apps, and open-source accessibility tools.
