Single-Switch Access
Also known as: One-switch access, Single switch scanning
An input method that allows users to control a computer, AAC device, or other technology using only one switch or button. Users with severe motor impairments who cannot operate a keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen can use various switch types—including buttons pressed by hand, head, or foot; sip-and-puff devices; or proximity sensors—to navigate interfaces through scanning patterns. Single-switch access is essential for people with conditions like ALS, locked-in syndrome, or quadriplegia, enabling communication and computer control when other input methods are not feasible.
