Athetosis
Also known as: Athetoid movements
A movement disorder characterized by slow, involuntary, writhing movements, particularly affecting the hands, feet, and face. Athetosis is one form of dyskinetic cerebral palsy and results from damage to the basal ganglia. People with athetosis often experience difficulty with fine motor control, which significantly impacts their ability to use standard keyboards and pointing devices. Assistive technology solutions for people with athetosis may include keyguards, larger targets, adjustable input timing, and alternative input methods like switch scanning.
