Health Monitoring

Also known as: Remote Patient Monitoring, Health Surveillance

The continuous or periodic collection of health-related data using sensors, wearables, or smart home technology to track an individual's wellbeing and detect problems. Health monitoring systems may track vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure), activity levels, medication adherence, sleep patterns, or behavioral changes that indicate cognitive decline or health emergencies. For older adults and people with disabilities, such monitoring can enable independent living while providing safety nets. Privacy considerations are central to health monitoring design—research shows users prefer sensors over video cameras and are more willing to share data with healthcare providers than with government or insurance companies.
