Pen Input
Also known as: Stylus Input, Pen-Based Input
An input method using a pen or stylus to interact with a computing device, typically through direct manipulation on a touchscreen or digitizer. Pen input offers advantages for users with certain motor impairments: compared to mice, pens allow users to leverage hand-eye coordination skills developed through handwriting, and the direct mapping between pen position and cursor position eliminates the indirection of mouse movement. Research has shown pens can reduce the performance gap between younger and older adults compared to mice. However, pen interaction presents unique challenges including slipping (unintentional movement before lifting), drifting (accidentally selecting adjacent items), and systematic targeting biases that vary between individuals.
