Nonspeech Audio
Also known as: Non-Speech Sounds, Auditory Cues
Audio feedback in user interfaces that conveys information through sounds other than synthesized or recorded speech, including earcons (abstract musical motifs), auditory icons (realistic sounds representing actions or objects), and sonification (data mapped to sound parameters). Nonspeech audio can provide rapid, ambient feedback without demanding the focused attention that speech requires, making it valuable for status monitoring, navigation cues, and alerts. Research has explored nonspeech audio for GUI accessibility, including sonifying mouse cursor position and movements, though speech-based screen readers became the dominant solution. Nonspeech audio remains important in auditory displays, gaming accessibility, and multimodal interface design.
