Voice rest

Also known as: vocal rest, voice therapy

A prescribed period of reduced or eliminated voice use, typically following laryngeal surgery, vocal cord injury, or to treat voice disorders. During voice rest, patients may be instructed to whisper or remain completely silent, relying on written communication, AAC devices, or text-to-speech systems. Voice rest can last from days to weeks, creating temporary but significant communication barriers. This context drives research into whisper-to-speech conversion and other assistive technologies that can bridge the communication gap during recovery without straining healing vocal structures.
