Neuromuscular Disease
Also known as: Neuromuscular Disorder, NMD
A broad category of conditions that affect the nerves controlling voluntary muscles, the muscles themselves, or the communication between nerves and muscles. Neuromuscular diseases include muscular dystrophies, motor neurone disease (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy, myasthenia gravis, and various neuropathies. These conditions typically cause progressive muscle weakness, reduced range of motion, fatigue, and loss of fine motor control, significantly impacting a person's ability to use standard computer input devices such as keyboards and mice. People with neuromuscular diseases often retain cognitive function while experiencing increasing physical limitations, making accessible technology and alternative input methods — such as compact keypads, eye tracking, switch access, and voice control — essential for maintaining independence and participation in digital life.
