Severe and Multiple Disabilities
Also known as: Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, PMLD, Severe Multiple Disabilities
A condition where an individual has two or more significant disabilities occurring simultaneously, typically involving profound physical impairments combined with intellectual disability and often sensory impairments. People with severe and multiple disabilities frequently have very limited voluntary movement, little or no speech, and significant cognitive challenges that together create complex barriers to communication, learning, and interaction with technology. Causes include cerebral palsy, cerebral hypoxia, genetic conditions, and traumatic brain injury. These individuals represent one of the most underserved populations in assistive technology research, as their combination of impairments often falls below the threshold for conventional assistive devices like physical switches or AAC systems. Assessment of voluntary movement and cognitive awareness is a fundamental challenge, as subtle responses may be misinterpreted or overlooked by caregivers.
