Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Also known as: AAC
A range of methods, devices, and strategies used to supplement or replace speech for individuals who have difficulty producing or comprehending spoken language. AAC encompasses both unaided approaches (such as gestures, sign language, and facial expressions) and aided approaches using external tools (such as communication boards, speech-generating devices, and text-to-speech apps). AAC users include people with conditions such as cerebral palsy, ALS, autism, aphasia, and other speech or language disabilities. Modern AAC devices use predictive text, symbol-based interfaces, and increasingly AI-powered suggestions to help users communicate more efficiently.
