In Situ Study
Also known as: Field Study, In-the-Wild Study, Remote Study
An in situ study is a research method where participants are observed or data is collected in their natural environment rather than in a controlled laboratory setting. In accessibility research, in situ studies are particularly valuable because they capture how users interact with their own assistive technology configurations, preferred browsers, and real-world tasks — factors that are difficult to replicate in a lab. Remote in situ studies, often using web proxies or logging tools, allow researchers to observe diverse participants over extended periods, providing ecologically valid data about the accessibility barriers people actually encounter in daily web use.
