Color Identifier
Also known as: Color Detector, Color Recognition Device
A color identifier is an assistive technology device or application that detects and announces the color of objects for people with vision impairments. Standalone hardware devices use a light sensor pressed against an object to identify its color and speak the result aloud. Smartphone apps use the device camera to perform similar color detection. Color identifiers help blind and low vision users with everyday tasks such as selecting clothing, sorting laundry, identifying food items, or choosing craft materials. Limitations include difficulty with patterns, gradients, and mixed colors, as well as the high cost of dedicated hardware devices — some retail for over a thousand dollars. Smartphone-based alternatives are more affordable but may be less accurate or harder to position correctly.
