Multisensory Interface

Also known as: Multimodal Interface, Multi-Sensory Feedback

An interface that communicates information through multiple sensory channels simultaneously, such as visual, auditory, and tactile (haptic) feedback. Multisensory interfaces are particularly valuable in accessibility because they reduce dependence on any single sense, allowing users with impairments in one modality to receive information through others. For example, a system combining screen magnification, text-to-speech, and vibration feedback provides low vision users with redundant cues that reinforce each other. Research shows that multimodal feedback can improve task performance, reduce errors, and increase confidence for users with sensory impairments.
