Eyes-Free Interaction

Also known as: Eyes-Free, Eyes-Free Gaming, Eyes-Free Interface

Eyes-free interaction refers to the use of digital systems and interfaces without relying on visual output, using alternative modalities such as audio, haptic feedback, or speech. In gaming contexts, eyes-free games use 3D spatial audio, sound cues, and non-visual feedback to enable play by people who are blind or visually impaired. More broadly, eyes-free interaction is relevant to any situation where visual attention is unavailable or limited, including mobile use while walking, driving interfaces, and accessible computing. The approach requires careful design of auditory and tactile feedback to convey information that would typically be presented visually.
