Non-Visual Skimming
Also known as: Aural Skimming, Accessible Skimming
Non-visual skimming is the process of quickly surveying and extracting key information from text content without visual access, typically through auditory means such as screen readers. While sighted users skim by rapidly scanning text with their eyes, blind users lack an equivalent mechanism — screen readers present content linearly, requiring users to listen to all text or skip content blindly. Non-visual skimming techniques use text summarization, structural cues, or speech rate manipulation to help screen reader users quickly grasp the gist of content, reducing the time and cognitive effort needed to process web pages.
