Empathy in Design
Also known as: Design Empathy, Empathic Design
Empathy in design refers to the ability and practice of understanding and sharing the feelings, perspectives, and experiences of the people who will use a product or service. In accessibility contexts, empathy involves recognizing the challenges faced by people with disabilities and using that understanding to inform design decisions. Research has shown that empathy profiles — measured through dimensions like perspective-taking, empathic concern, and personal distress — can influence how strongly technology professionals consider accessibility in their work. While empathy alone is insufficient for accessible design (knowledge of standards and testing methods is also needed), it can be a motivating factor for inclusive practice.
