Occupancy Grid

Also known as: Occupancy Map, Mental Occupancy Grid

A spatial representation that divides an environment into a grid of cells, each indicating whether that location is occupied by an object, free space, or unknown. In accessibility and assistive technology, occupancy grids are used to help people with visual impairments build mental models of their surroundings. Systems that convert visual scene data into auditory or tactile representations can enable users to construct a mental occupancy grid, understanding what objects are present and where they are located in a space.
