Utterance-Based System

Also known as: Utterance-Based AAC, Prestored Message System

A type of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) system that uses prestored phrases, sentences, or complete utterances rather than requiring users to construct messages word-by-word or letter-by-letter. Utterance-based systems organise prestored text hierarchically, often using schema-based structures that mirror real-world event sequences (such as ordering at a restaurant), allowing users to quickly locate and deliver contextually appropriate messages. This approach prioritises communication speed while maintaining message accuracy, making it particularly suitable for literate adults in familiar public situations.
