Scene Text Recognition
Also known as: Scene Text Detection, Text in the Wild, Environmental Text Detection
The computer vision task of detecting and reading text that appears naturally in real-world environments, such as street signs, product labels, shop names, and building numbers. Unlike optical character recognition (OCR) for scanned documents where text layout is predictable, scene text recognition must handle complex backgrounds, variable fonts, colours, sizes, orientations, lighting conditions, and perspective distortions. In accessibility, scene text recognition is a critical component of camera-based reading assistants and navigation aids for people who are blind or visually impaired.
