Art Therapy
Also known as: Creative Arts Therapy, Arts Therapy
A form of psychotherapy that uses creative art-making as the primary mode of expression and communication. Art therapy is facilitated by trained therapists and can involve painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, and other visual arts activities. For older adults with dementia and other cognitive impairments, art therapy provides a way to engage in meaningful creative activity, express emotions, and maintain quality of life even as verbal communication declines. Research suggests that participation in creative activities can decrease dementia risk and improve wellbeing, making art therapy an increasingly important component of person-centred care for people with cognitive disabilities.
