Restricted Interest

Also known as: Circumscribed Interest, Perseverative Interest, Fixated Interest

An intense, narrow focus on specific topics, objects, or activities that is characteristic of autism spectrum disorder. Restricted interests can range from common subjects like trains, maps, or specific fictional characters to highly unusual topics like electricity pylons or vacuum cleaners. While often viewed as a deficit in clinical contexts because they can limit engagement with other activities, restricted interests are increasingly recognised as a potential asset — research shows that embedding these interests into educational and therapeutic interventions can significantly increase motivation, task adherence, and performance for autistic individuals. The strength and specificity of these interests varies widely between individuals.
