Social Connectedness
The subjective experience of feeling close to and in touch with others, characterized by a sense of belonging, being cared for, and maintaining meaningful relationships. Social connectedness is distinct from social contact — a person can have frequent interactions yet feel disconnected, or feel connected through passive awareness of others' lives without direct conversation. In disability and rehabilitation contexts, social connectedness is recognized as a key determinant of psychological well-being and recovery. Extended hospitalization, residential rehabilitation, or the onset of disability can severely disrupt social connectedness, leading to isolation, depression, and poorer health outcomes. Technology interventions such as photo sharing, social media, and ambient awareness systems can help maintain connectedness during periods of physical separation.
