Cognitive Orthosis

Also known as: Cognitive Prosthesis, Cognitive Assistive Device

A technology-based device or system designed to compensate for cognitive deficits by supporting functions such as memory, planning, attention, and task sequencing. Analogous to a physical orthosis that supports a weakened limb, a cognitive orthosis augments impaired cognitive abilities rather than attempting to restore them. These systems typically use environmental sensors, activity monitoring, and context-aware prompting to guide users through complex activities of daily living such as meal preparation, personal care, or navigation. Cognitive orthoses are particularly relevant for people with intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injury, dementia, or other conditions affecting executive function.
