Universe of One

Also known as: Universe-of-One, Personalized Prompting

A design approach in assistive technology where content, prompts, and guidance are tailored to each individual user rather than providing generic or standardized instructions. The concept is particularly important for people with cognitive impairments, who often struggle with abstract representations like icons, symbols, or generic maps. Instead, a universe-of-one system uses personalized content specific to each user and context — for example, showing actual photographs of the specific environment from the user's own perspective rather than schematic diagrams. This approach recognizes that cognitive disabilities are highly variable, and what works for one person may not work for another, requiring individually customized support.
