Relational Diagram
Also known as: Relational Information Display, RID
A graphical representation that depicts items (nodes) and the relationships (links) between them using a two-dimensional spatial layout. Common forms include entity-relationship diagrams, flowcharts, state diagrams, network diagrams, and mind maps. Relational diagrams encode information through spatial position, visual connections (lines, arrows), grouping, and labeling. They present significant accessibility challenges because their meaning depends heavily on visual spatial relationships that are difficult to convey through non-visual modalities. Research on making relational diagrams accessible has explored tactile representations, auditory displays using hierarchical navigation, and haptic interfaces, with approaches for both reading existing diagrams and constructing new ones through audio-only interfaces.
