Gallaudet University
A federally chartered private university in Washington, D.C., and the only university in the world designed specifically for deaf and hard of hearing students, with all programs and services tailored to their needs. Founded in 1864 and named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a pioneer in deaf education, the university is a major center for research in deaf studies, sign language linguistics, and deaf education. Gallaudet has been influential in accessibility research, including early work on web-based sign language learning tools and the development of technologies to support deaf and hard of hearing communities.
