Tactile Rendering
The process of converting visual or spatial information into a tactile format that can be perceived through touch by blind or visually impaired users. Tactile rendering involves decisions about how to represent 3D objects, spatial relationships, depth, and visual attributes (like colour or shading) using tactile properties such as raised lines, textures, dot patterns, and line thickness. Effective tactile rendering differs from visual rendering because it must account for the sequential nature of tactile exploration, the lower resolution of touch compared to vision, and the need to represent information from viewpoints that are most recognizable by touch rather than most visually appealing.
