MIDI Controller
Also known as: MIDI Input Device
A hardware device that generates MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) messages to control music software or sound modules without being a traditional musical instrument. MIDI controllers include keyboards, drum pads, wind controllers, joysticks, and purpose-built accessible devices. In accessibility, MIDI controllers are significant because they decouple the physical act of input from the musical output — a single switch, head pointer, or breath controller can be mapped to send MIDI note and control messages, enabling people with severe physical disabilities to trigger sounds, compose music, and perform without the fine motor skills required by conventional instruments. The MIDI protocol's flexibility in mapping any physical input to any musical output makes it a powerful foundation for accessible music technology.
