Assistive Technology Assessment

Also known as: AT Assessment, Assistive Technology Evaluation, AT Evaluation

An assistive technology assessment is a systematic evaluation process to identify the most appropriate assistive technology solutions for an individual with a disability. The assessment typically considers the person's abilities, goals, environments, and tasks to recommend devices, software, and strategies that will best support their independence and participation. Assessments may include hands-on trials with different technologies, analysis of the physical and cognitive demands of target activities, consideration of training needs, and follow-up to ensure the technology is being used effectively. Effective assessments are person-centered, involving the individual as an active participant in decision-making rather than a passive recipient of prescribed solutions.
