Cutaneous Perception
Also known as: Cutaneous Sense, Cutaneous Feedback, Tactile Perception
The sensory experience derived from receptors beneath the surface of the skin that respond to temperature, pain, and pressure. In the context of assistive technology, cutaneous perception enables users to detect surface textures, raised patterns, and embossed details through touch — the basis for reading braille and exploring tactile graphics. Together with kinesthetic perception, cutaneous feedback forms the haptic channel used in accessible interfaces for conveying spatial and data information to blind and visually impaired users.
