Icon Size

Also known as: Target Size, Touch Target Size

The physical or rendered dimensions of graphical interface elements such as icons, buttons, and interactive controls. Research consistently shows that larger icon sizes improve interaction performance for users with low vision and motor impairments. WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 2.5.5 recommends a minimum target size of 44 by 44 CSS pixels for pointer inputs, while WCAG 2.2 introduced additional target size requirements. Icon size is one of the most impactful design variables for low vision accessibility, with studies demonstrating that performance differences between sighted and low vision users narrow as icon sizes increase.
