Web Intermediary
Also known as: Web Proxy, Transcoding Proxy
A system that sits between a user's web browser and the web server, intercepting and modifying HTTP requests and responses to adapt web content before it reaches the user. In accessibility contexts, web intermediaries can transform web pages to make them more accessible — for example, by simplifying layouts, extracting relevant content, adding alternative text, or converting pages into formats better suited to assistive technologies. Unlike browser extensions that modify pages client-side, web intermediaries process content server-side or at an intermediate point, allowing them to work with any browser or device. Examples include transcoding proxies that reformat pages for screen readers or small-screen devices.
