Symbol Selection Set

Also known as: Symbol Board, Communication Board

A structured collection of graphic symbols, words, or phrases arranged in a grid or other layout for use in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Users select symbols to compose messages, with each symbol representing a word, phrase, concept, or action. Selection sets can be organised by category (greetings, needs, emotions), frequency of use, or communication context, and may use various symbol systems such as Blissymbolics, Makaton, or PCS (Picture Communication Symbols). The size and arrangement of the selection set depends on the user's cognitive and motor abilities — ranging from simple 3x2 grids for users with significant impairments to large 8x8 or larger grids for more capable users. Selection can be via direct touch, eye gaze, or switch-based scanning.
