Speech Synthesizer

Also known as: Speech Synthesiser, Text-to-Speech Engine, TTS Engine, Voice Synthesizer

Software or hardware that converts text into spoken audio output, producing artificial speech that can be used to read content aloud. Speech synthesizers are a fundamental component of many assistive technologies, including screen readers for blind users and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices that speak on behalf of people who cannot vocalise. Modern speech synthesis uses techniques ranging from concatenative synthesis (joining pre-recorded speech segments) to neural text-to-speech models that produce increasingly natural-sounding voices. Quality, naturalness, and the availability of diverse voices across languages, ages, and genders are important accessibility considerations.
