Target Ambiguity

Also known as: Command Ambiguity

A usability problem in voice and speech-based interfaces where a user's spoken command could refer to more than one element on the screen. For example, if multiple buttons share the same label in different parts of an application, saying that label creates ambiguity about which target the user intends. Target ambiguity is a significant barrier in voice-controlled accessibility solutions because, unlike mouse users who can click directly on the intended item, voice users have no physical way to point at one of several identically named targets. Effective voice interfaces must include disambiguation strategies to resolve these conflicts.
