Rigid Scoping
A voice navigation strategy that requires users to explicitly navigate through a hierarchical structure before issuing commands to specific targets. In rigid scoping, the user must first select a container or menu level, then name items within that scope, preventing ambiguity by limiting the set of valid targets at each step. While effective at avoiding ambiguity, rigid scoping reduces efficiency because it requires multiple sequential commands to reach deeply nested targets, making it less preferred by users compared to more flexible approaches.
