Hands-Free Control

Also known as: Hands-Free Interaction, Hands-Free Input

Any method of operating a device or computer system that does not require the use of the hands or fingers. Hands-free control encompasses a range of input techniques including voice commands, eye tracking, head movements, sip-and-puff switches, foot controls, and EMG-based muscle signals. These approaches are critical for users with upper limb impairments, repetitive strain injuries, or conditions that affect hand dexterity, enabling them to control wheelchairs, computers, smartphones, and other technology. Hands-free control is also relevant in contexts where hands are occupied, such as surgical environments or industrial settings.
