Background Color Music

Also known as: BCM

A sonification technique that maps the background colors of visually distinct content regions on a web page to recognizable melodies, allowing blind users to perceive the color-based grouping structure of a page through hearing. Each background color is assigned a unique melody played by a different instrument (for example, piano for white, strings for blue, synthesizer for red). The duration of the melody corresponds to the size of the color region. Background Color Music plays in one ear while foreground sounds indicating links, images, and text play in the other, leveraging the Cocktail Party effect for selective attention.
