Intensive Care Unit

Also known as: ICU, Critical Care Unit

A specialized hospital department that provides continuous monitoring and life-support treatment for patients with severe or life-threatening conditions. ICU patients frequently experience temporary communication disabilities due to intubation, sedation, or physical weakness, making them unable to speak, write, or gesture effectively. The ICU environment presents unique challenges for assistive technology: devices must be infection-control compliant (able to withstand thorough cleaning), physically compact enough for the bedside, usable by patients in various positions (sitting, lying flat, on their side), and operable with extremely limited motor input due to drips, monitors, and physical restraints attached to patients' hands and arms.
