Natural Speech Output
Also known as: Recorded Speech, Digitized Speech
Speech output produced from digital recordings of actual human speakers, as opposed to artificially generated synthetic speech. Natural speech output preserves the prosody, intonation, emotion, and vocal quality of the original speaker, making it generally more pleasant and easier to understand than synthetic alternatives. In assistive technology applications such as AAC devices and smart home systems, natural speech output is typically preferred by users but is limited to pre-recorded vocabulary — new words or phrases cannot be generated on the fly. This trade-off between naturalness and flexibility is a key design consideration for speech-based assistive technologies.
