Myopia

Also known as: Nearsightedness, Short-Sightedness

A common refractive error in which the eye focuses light in front of the retina rather than on it, causing distant objects to appear blurred while near objects remain clear. Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, and affects an estimated 30% of the global population with prevalence increasing worldwide. In the context of digital accessibility, uncorrected or undercorrected myopia can affect the ability to read screens at typical viewing distances, and severe myopia (above -6 diopters) is associated with increased risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and other conditions that can lead to permanent low vision. Software-based approaches to compensating for refractive errors, including image pre-compensation using the eye's wavefront aberration, offer alternatives to optical correction.
